Melissa Carper is a one-of-a-kind voice in American roots music. With a sound that blends classic country, western swing, soul, jazz, and blues, her music feels both timeless and fresh. A skilled upright bassist and powerhouse vocalist, Melissa draws comparisons to greats like Loretta Lynn and Billie Holiday – earning her the nickname “Hillbilly Holiday.”
Originally from Nebraska, Melissa spent years living and performing in Eureka Springs, where she found community and creative inspiration. She’s known for co-founding groups like The Carper Family, Sad Daddy, and Buffalo Gals with fiddler Rebecca Patek. Her years in Eureka’s music scene helped shape the storytelling style and vintage flair that define her solo work today.
Her breakthrough solo album Daddy’s Country Gold introduced fans to her signature blend of vulnerability and wit, with standout tracks like “Old Fashioned Gal.” She followed it with Ramblin’ Soul – a bold, genre-crossing record that earned national acclaim. Her most recent release, Borned In Ya, continues that evolution with lush arrangements and even deeper emotional resonance.
Melissa’s songs are heartfelt, often humorous, and always honest – a perfect fit for Fall Diversity Weekend, where storytelling, identity, and community take center stage. Join us for this unforgettable performance from an artist whose roots run deep in Eureka Springs.
